Why You Should Listen
Majd Mashharawi is a dedicated resident of war-torn Gaza. In 2015, she observed the pressing need for construction materials to rebuild damaged buildings and infrastructure. Then in her early 20’s, she took the initiative by founding GreenCake, a pioneering company that ingeniously creates environmentally friendly bricks from ash and rubble, offering a sustainable solution to rebuilding efforts. GreenCake earned recognition as a runner-up in the esteemed MIT Pan Arab competition.
In 2017, Majd’s passion for sustainable solutions led her to develop SunBox, an innovative and affordable solar system that produces renewable energy. With a profound commitment to alleviating the adverse effects of the energy crisis in Gaza, where access to electricity has been severely limited to mere hours per day, SunBox has positively impacted the lives of countless individuals, providing electricity to over 75,000 people. Sunbox also provided solar panels for a water desalinization plant in Gaza which now serves clean water to a like number of people. She expects to grow her companies to serve the entire region.
Majd holds a BSc in Civil Engineering from the Islamic University of Gaza. Her pursuit of impactful solutions earned her recognition by Fast Company in 2018, as one of the most creative people in business. A compelling speaker, her TED Talk titled “How I’m Making Bricks Out of Ashes and Rubble in Gaza” has garnered nearly 1.3 million views.
In recognition of her outstanding contributions to humanitarian efforts, Majd and SunBox Company were honored with the Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Award in Louisville, Kentucky, by the prestigious Muhammad Ali Center.
Through her entrepreneurial spirit and unwavering commitment to sustainability and community welfare, Majd Mashharawi continues to be a driving force in transforming lives.
