Women In the Midrash

Who are the women of the Bible? The text of the Tanach (Hebrew Bible) provides only snippets of the lives of female heroines. Even Miriam, one of the most well-known biblical personalities, appears only in several places in the Torah and each description of her is limited. This class will bring to life biblical personalities who are often forgotten. The literature of Midrash elaborates on the lives of many biblical heroines and explores the roles of many completely unknown female figures. We will examine the lives of Serach Bat Asher, Batyah (the daughter of Pharaoh), Miriam, Rahav, Vashti and Bat Sheva, and more. Through Midrash, we will discover the incredible lives, gifts and roles that women have played in the ancient Jewish narrative.

We are delighted to offer all classes to members of the JCOH at no charge. There is a $200 fee for non-members for all 2017 summer classes unless noted. Book fee where applicable.
